MG ADAPT Explained: What EV, HEV, PHEV and REEV Mean, and Which One Suits an Indian Buyer

Quick Summary • JSW MG Motor India unveiled MG ADAPT in Gurugram on 16 July 2026, describing it as India’s first multi New Energy Vehicle platform (manufacturer claimed). • ADAPT stands for Advance Drive Architecture Platform Technology and supports EV, HEV, PHEV and REEV powertrains on one modular architecture (documented). • MG has confirmed one EV and one PHEV will debut on the platform by FY2026-27 (manufacturer claimed). • The platform switches automatically between four modes: Pure Electric Drive, Series Hybrid Drive, Parallel Hybrid Drive and Engine Direct Drive (manufacturer claimed). • MG describes the package as including India’s first 10-in-1 intelligent electric drive unit and the world’s first electromagnetic dedicated hybrid transmission. Both are the company’s own claims and we have not verified either (manufacturer claimed). • A REEV never drives its wheels with the engine, which makes it the format best suited to India’s thin fast-charging network (editorial analysis).

Quick Summary • Mahindra added a six-seat captain-chair layout to the XEV 9S on 19 August 2026, priced from ₹25.25 lakh ex-showroom (manufacturer claimed). • It is offered on Pack Two Above, Pack Three and Pack Three Above. The entry Pack One Above stays seven-seat only (manufacturer claimed). • The premium over the equivalent seven-seat variant is reported at both ₹20,000 and ₹25,000, and Mahindra has not published a variant-wise table (unconfirmed). • The XEV 9S uses 59kWh, 70kWh and 79kWh battery packs with a claimed range up to 679km (manufacturer claimed). • A single rear-mounted motor produces 286PS and 380Nm, with 0 to 100kmph in a claimed 7 seconds (manufacturer claimed). • The full XEV 9S range runs ₹20.65 lakh to ₹30.90 lakh ex-showroom, excluding the 11.2kW AC charger (manufacturer listing). • The Kia Carens Clavis EV is the only other mass-market electric three-row car in India offering a choice of six or seven seats (documented).

BMW i7 Facelift Launched in India at ₹1.95 Crore: the Entry Price Fell ₹15 Lakh While the Battery Grew

Quick Summary • BMW India launched the facelifted i7 on 11 September 2026 at ₹1.95 crore for the 50 xDrive M Sport and ₹2.65 crore for the M70 xDrive, ex-showroom (manufacturer claimed). • The outgoing i7 ranged from ₹2.10 crore to ₹2.58 crore, so the entry price fell by ₹15 lakh while the top variant rose ₹7 lakh (our arithmetic on BMW India pricing). • BMW assembles the 50 xDrive M Sport at its Chennai plant. The M70 xDrive arrives as a fully imported unit (the manufacturer claims). • Battery capacity rises to 112.5kWh from 101.7kWh, with 728km on the WLTP cycle for the 50 xDrive, which BMW says is 125km more than the outgoing car (manufacturer claimed). • The M70 xDrive makes 680hp and 1,015Nm in Sport mode, rising to 1,100Nm on Sport Boost, with 686km WLTP (manufacturer claimed). • BMW India has still published no ARAI- or India-certified range figure for either variant (unconfirmed). • Rear passengers get a 31.3-inch 8K Theatre Screen; the driver gets Panoramic iDrive with a 17.9-inch central display and a 14.6-inch passenger screen (manufacturer-claimed).

India Says It Has 52,718 Public EV Chargers. Three Official Figures Are in Circulation and They Do Not Reconcile

Quick Summary • Parliament was told on 21 July 2026 that India has 52,718 public EV charging stations (Lok Sabha written reply, Ministry of Heavy Industries). • Only 16,561 of those carry a fast charger suitable for cars, which is 31.4 percent of the network (our arithmetic on the ministry figure). • A separate figure of 67,657 charging points installed as of August 2026 is also in circulation, alongside a Ministry of Heavy Industries count of 29,151 stations at December 2025 (documented). • The three figures use different units and different cut-off dates, and no published note reconciles them (unconfirmed). • PM E-DRIVE has sanctioned 6,562 chargers with none installed, against a scheme target of 72,300 stations (Lok Sabha reply, August 2026). • ₹2,000 crore is allocated for public charging under PM E-DRIVE and ₹912.50 crore under FAME-II (Ministry of Heavy Industries). • India needs an estimated 1.32 million charging points by 2030 on Confederation of Indian Industry estimates (third-party estimate).

Delhi’s EV Policy 2026 Gives Private Car Buyers No Purchase Subsidy: What You Actually Get, and What You Do Not

Quick Summary • The Delhi Electric Vehicles Policy 2026 was notified on 30 June 2026 and took effect on 1 July 2026, running to 31 March 2030 (policy notification). • Electric cars priced up to ₹30 lakh ex-showroom get a 100 percent road tax and registration fee waiver. Above ₹30 lakh, nothing (policy notification). • Private electric car buyers get no direct purchase subsidy under the 2026 policy. The ₹1.5 lakh four-wheeler figure still in circulation belongs to the superseded 2020 policy (documented). • A ₹1 lakh scrappage incentive applies if you scrap an eligible old Delhi vehicle and buy a new electric car, capped at the first 100,000 applicants (policy notification). • A three-year lock-in prevents re-registering the vehicle in another state, which matters for Gurugram and Noida buyers (policy notification). • Electric two-wheelers up to ₹2.25 lakh get ₹10,000 per kWh capped at ₹30,000 in year one, tapering to ₹10,000 by year three (policy notification). • Whether strong hybrids under ₹30 lakh keep a 50 percent road tax concession is disputed between the draft and the notified text (unconfirmed).

Quick Summary • BMW India opened pre-launch bookings for the facelifted 7 Series range, including the i7, at 12:30 hrs on 1 August 2026 (BMW India media information). • The India launch is widely put at 11 September 2026, but we could not find a BMW India release confirming the date (unconfirmed). • The i7 moves to a 112.5kWh usable Gen6 cylindrical-cell battery, up from 101.7kWh (manufacturer claimed). • BMW’s global press kit states the fully electric variants now exceed 720km on the WLTP cycle. Figures quoted at the April reveal were 708km and 707km (manufacturer claimed, disputed). • DC charging rises from 195kW to 250kW, with 10 to 80 percent quoted at 28 minutes (manufacturer claimed). • The outgoing India-spec i7 is rated 581.5km by ARAI against a WLTP figure of 625km, a gap of about 7 percent (certified, and our arithmetic). • India prices, variants and the India-certified range are all unannounced. The outgoing car sells from ₹2.10 crore to ₹2.58 crore ex-showroom (manufacturer listing).

Tata EV Offers, September 2026: Up to ₹3.35 Lakh on the Curvv EV and ₹2.75 Lakh on the Harrier EV

    • Benefits of up to ₹3.35 lakh on the Tata Curvv EV and up to ₹2.75 lakh on the Harrier EV are in circulation for September 2026 (unconfirmed, dealer-level). • The ₹3.35 lakh figure applies to Curvv EV variants superseded by the SeriesX update of May 2026, not to a current SeriesX car (unconfirmed). • Current SeriesX Curvv EV variants carry up to ₹65,000, roughly a fifth of the headline number (unconfirmed). • The Harrier EV’s ₹2.75 lakh is three separate offers stacked: a ₹1 lakh intervention offer, up to ₹75,000 exchange or scrappage, and up to ₹1 lakh loyalty benefit (unconfirmed). • A first-time buyer with no car to trade in and no Tata in the household qualifies for the intervention component only (our reading of the offer structure). • Tata Motors does not publish a national discount schedule. Figures vary by city, variant, model year and stock, and are not a price cut. • Tata Motors lists the Curvv EV from ₹17.49 lakh and the Harrier EV from ₹21.49 lakh, both ex-showroom (manufacturer listed).

Tata and Hyundai EV prices rose on 1 September 2026: how much more you now pay, and what is still unpublished

    • Every Tata car, including all seven Tata EVs, costs up to ₹25,000 more from 1 September 2026 (Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles exchange filing, 21 August 2026). • Hyundai has raised prices by up to 1% across its range from September 2026, which puts the Creta Electric up by as much as ₹18,000 to ₹24,000 on its ₹18.03 to ₹23.67 lakh ex-showroom span (our calculation on Hyundai's filing of 19 August 2026). • Maruti moved first, by ₹2,500 to ₹30,000 from August 2026, so the E-Vitara was already repriced (Maruti Suzuki statement). • Neither Tata nor Hyundai had published a model-wise revised EV price list as of 2 September 2026 (unconfirmed variant pricing). • This is Tata's third increase of 2026 after 0.5% on ICE cars from 1 April and up to 1.5% across ICE and EV from 1 July, and Hyundai's third after 0.6% in January and up to ₹12,800 from 1 June (company filings). • On a ₹10 lakh EV, ₹25,000 is 2.5% of the ex-showroom price; on a ₹20 lakh EV, it is 1.25% (our arithmetic). • GST on electric cars stays at 5%, so the rise is entirely due to manufacturer pricing, not tax (GST rate schedule).

Tesla says it has 20 Superchargers in India: what that number does and does not mean for Model Y buyers

    • Tesla India country head Sharad Agarwal said on 1 September 2026 that Tesla has installed 20 Superchargers in India; Tesla has not said whether that means 20 sites or 20 stalls (unconfirmed). • A Tesla-Approved Body Shop, service centre and test-ride facility opened in Ahmedabad on 1 September 2026, Tesla's seventh after Gurgaon, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai (Tesla statement). • Agarwal quoted the Model Y RWD at ₹51.89 lakh and the Model Y L at ₹61.99 lakh ex-showroom; Tesla relisted the RWD at ₹50.89 lakh in May 2026, so the ₹1 lakh gap is unconfirmed until the configurator is checked. • Tesla says a partner-financed Model Y starts at ₹6 lakh down and ₹39,990 a month; tenure and interest rate were not stated. • Tesla says it has delivered cars in 21 states through its direct-to-home model (Tesla statement). • Model Y range figures are WLTP, not India-certified: 500km for the RWD and 681km for the Model Y L (Tesla claimed).

Quick Summary: • Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles sold 16,549 EVs in August 2026 across domestic and export markets, up 94% on 8,540 in August 2025 (Tata exchange disclosure, 1 September 2026). • Tata puts its August EV registration share at 43.74%, its highest yet, up from 42.54% in July (Tata release citing Vahan). • Across January to August 2026, Tata registered 86,182 EVs, up 85.5%, against a 79.7% expansion in the whole electric passenger vehicle market (Vahan data). • Mahindra sold 59,257 SUVs in India in August, up 50%, but does not split out EV volumes (Mahindra release). • JSW MG Motor India wholesaled 7,508 vehicles, up 14%, with no EV split published; Hector Tomahawk EV deliveries begin in September (JSW MG release). • Tata says the Punch EV had its best month ever but has not published the number (unconfirmed volume). • Every Tata EV costs up to ₹25,000 more from 1 September 2026 (Tata exchange filing, 21 August 2026).

Quick Summary • Porsche will formally debut the Cayenne Electric in India on 30 September 2026; prices and bookings have been open since 20 November 2025 (Porsche, manufacturer claimed). • Ex-showroom prices start at 1.77 crore (Cayenne Electric) and 2.27 crore (Cayenne Turbo Electric) on Porsche India’s list (Porsche). • 113 kWh battery; up to 642 km WLTP (Electric) and 623 km WLTP (Turbo). India-certified range is not published (Porsche / unconfirmed for India). • 800-volt system charges at up to 390 kW, and up to 400 kW under specific conditions, for 10 to 80 per cent in under 16 minutes (Porsche). • The Turbo Electric makes up to 850 kW (1,156 PS) and does 0 to 100 kmph in 2.5 seconds; the Electric takes 4.8 seconds (Porsche). • The catch, our view: almost no Indian public charger delivers 390 kW, so the headline charging speed is theoretical here for now (TMEV view).

Mahindra puts its whole electric SUV range on Battery-as-a-Service

Quick Summary • Mahindra extended Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) to the XEV 9S and XEV 9e on 28 August 2026, after launching it on the BE 6 Sporteq (Mahindra, manufacturer claimed). • Under BaaS the XEV 9S starts at 12.65 lakh and the XEV 9e at 13.90 lakh, both ex-showroom and battery-excluded (Mahindra). • The BE 6 Sporteq starts at 11.45 lakh on the same plan (Mahindra). • The battery is rented at 3.75 per km, with a battery EMI from 6,975 a month on Mahindra’s 60 km-a-day example (Mahindra). • Standard battery-included prices start at 20.65 lakh (XEV 9S) and 21.90 lakh (XEV 9e), so BaaS trims about 8 lakh off the sticker (Mahindra). • Our estimate: the rental only beats owning the battery below roughly 2.1 lakh km of lifetime driving (TMEV estimate).

The gap between the two is ₹8 lakh (Mahindra claimed). • On Mahindra’s own usage assumption, the battery subscription costs ₹82,125 a year, so the ₹8 lakh saving is erased in roughly 9 years 9 months, or 2,13,333 km (our estimate). • A 70 kWh pack joins the BE 6 for the first time, priced from ₹22.95 lakh on the THREE. • Certified range on the carried-over packs is 548 km for the 59 kWh and 683 km for the 79 kWh, both MIDC Part 1 plus Part 2, ARAI certified (certified). • The Formula E Freedom Edition claims 0 to 100 kmph in 6.44 seconds with Acceleration Boost, against 6.7 seconds for the 210 kW BE 6 in Mahindra’s own brochure (Mahindra claimed). • Deliveries begin on 26 August 2026.
