How to Compare an Electric Car the Right Way

Specs sheets are long and most of it doesn't change your day-to-day. These are the five things worth lining up, in the order that matters.

    1

Real-world range, not the brochure number

Start with the ARAI figure, then knock off about 20% for real Indian driving, AC, traffic and heat. A 450 km ARAI car gives you roughly 360 km in daily use. Match that usable number to your routes, not the headline.

    2

    Battery and charging speed

Battery size (kWh) only matters next to range and efficiency. What you'll feel day to day is charging: DC fast-charging speed and the 10–80% time on a fast charger, plus whether you can charge at home overnight. A bigger battery isn't automatically better if it charges slowly.

    3

    Safety

Check the Bharat NCAP star rating and, if it matters to you, the level of ADAS on the exact variant, not the top model. Safety kit often changes between variants of the same car.

    4

    Price and running cost

Compare on-road price and EMI, not just ex-showroom. On-road runs about 8–12% higher, though Delhi and Maharashtra waive road tax on EVs. Then factor charging cost against petrol, that's where an EV earns its premium back.

    5

    Practicality

Body type, seats and boot space. A 7-seater MPV and a compact hatch can sit in the same price band and suit completely different families. Don't let a spec war distract from the shape you actually need.

    EV Comparison Terms, Decoded

The words that trip up first-time buyers, in plain language.

    ARAI range
The range certified in a controlled lab test by India's ARAI. It's the headline number on brochures and usually higher than what you'll see on the road.
    Real-world range
What the car actually delivers in Indian conditions, roughly 20% below ARAI once you account for AC, traffic and highway speeds.
    kWh (battery)
Kilowatt-hour, the size of the battery, like the fuel tank of an EV. More kWh usually means more range, but also more weight and cost.
    kW (charging)
Kilowatt, the speed of charging. A higher kW DC charger fills the battery faster. This is the number that decides how long a highway stop takes.
    DC fast charging
High-speed public charging that can take many EVs from 10% to 80% in 30–60 minutes. The headline charging spec for road trips.
    AC charging
Slower charging from a home or destination wall box, measured in hours. Fine for overnight top-ups, which is how most owners charge. Battery health loves slow charging.
    ADAS
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, features like adaptive cruise, lane keeping and auto emergency braking. Availability varies by variant.
    Regenerative braking
The motor recovering energy when you lift off or brake, feeding it back to the battery and adding a little range in city driving.
    Ex-showroom vs on-road
Ex-showroom is the sticker price. On-road adds registration, road tax, insurance and handling, usually 8–12% more, and is what you actually pay.
