Volvo EX90 and ES90 launch in India on 12 October: what to check before the prices land
Volvo Car India launches two flagship EVs on 12 October 2026, the EX90 seven-seat SUV and the ES90 saloon, together on one day. They are the only EVs with a confirmed India launch date in October, and the week before the price reveal is the right time to know which numbers Volvo has actually committed to. Both will sit at the top of our electric cars by price guide the moment prices are out.
Volvo India managing director Jyoti Malhotra has said the company is sticking to one new EV a year in India, after the EX30. He has also said that nearly one in four Volvos sold in India is now electric. The ES90 also brings Volvo back into luxury saloons, a segment it left when the S90 was discontinued in 2025.

Figures are Volvo Cars global specifications and Volvo Car India announcements, accessed 8 October 2026. Ranges are WLTP manufacturer claims; NCAP results are certified by Euro NCAP and ANCAP for the European and Australian cars.
Which battery is India getting? Earlier EX90s were sold with a 111kWh pack and a quoted range of about 600km WLTP. Volvo's current global line-up lists 92kWh and 106kWh packs. Volvo Car India has not said which battery or motor versions it will sell, so check the spec sheet on 12 October before comparing range with an older review. |
Three things to check
The first is how the cars are built for India. Volvo assembles the XC60, XC90 and EC40 at its Hoskote plant near Bengaluru, and a locally assembled EX90 would be priced very differently from a fully built import. Volvo Car India has not said which route the 90-series EVs take.
The second is the India range figure. The 608km and 696km are WLTP numbers for European cars; an ARAI figure, if Volvo publishes one, will be measured on the Indian MIDC cycle and will not convert from WLTP by any fixed ratio. Our range test cycles explainer sets out why.
The third is the safety rating. The EX90's five-star results are for the European and Australian protocols, and the ES90 has no NCAP result anywhere yet. Neither car has a Bharat NCAP rating, and a Euro NCAP score does not carry over to the Indian protocol.

Price and rivals
Volvo has not announced prices. The EX90 will meet the Kia EV9 and the BMW iX in the three-row and large-SUV space, and the ES90 will be measured against the BMW i5. You can line up the Kia EV9 against both Volvos in our comparison tool once the India specifications are published, and browse every three-row option on our EVs by seating page.
The ThatsmyEV Take
We think the EX90 is the more important of the two for India. A seven-seat electric SUV with a five-star Euro NCAP rating from the brand Indian luxury buyers most associate with safety is a clearer proposition than a large electric saloon, in a market where luxury buyers have been moving from saloons to SUVs for years.
What decides both cars is the assembly route. If Volvo brings them as fully built imports, they become low-volume halo cars; if either is assembled at Hoskote, Volvo can price into the space the Kia EV9 occupies and turn its one-in-four EV share into something bigger.
For a buyer on 8 October 2026: do not book either car before 12 October. Wait for the price and the battery version, and if you are choosing between the EX90 and a petrol XC90 for a family, the EX90 is the one to test-drive first. ThatsMyEV will publish both prices on launch day.
