Honda 0 Alpha electric SUV concept, the basis for Honda's first EV for India

Honda 0 Alpha: Honda's first India EV is due by March 2027, and here is what is actually confirmed

If you are choosing a mid-size electric SUV this festive season, the Honda you might be waiting for has a firm window and almost no published numbers. Honda Cars India has said its first battery-electric car, the production version of the 0 α (0 Alpha) concept, will launch in the 2026-27 financial year, which ends on 31 March 2027. It will be built at Honda's Tapukara plant in Rajasthan and exported, Japan included. Its rivals are already in showrooms: the Hyundai Creta Electric, the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara and the Tata Sierra EV.

The 0 Alpha is back in search because Honda's Indian business changed hands at the top on 1 October 2026, when Toshiyuki Yanagisawa took over as President and CEO of Honda Cars India, and because the Elevate facelift, scheduled for 6 October, cleared the way for the EV as Honda's next product. Neither event came with new 0 Alpha details.

    Range numbers you may see

Ranges of 450km to 500km-plus quoted for the 0 Alpha are not Honda figures and carry no test cycle. Honda has not published a range on any cycle for the production car. When it does, the India figure will be an ARAI MIDC number, which does not convert from WLTP or EPA by a fixed ratio.

Why the 0 Alpha matters more to Honda than to the segment

Honda Cars India's May 2026 strategy update promised India-focused sub-four-metre and mid-size models from 2028, a signal that Honda wants products designed for this market rather than adapted for it. The 0 Alpha arrives before those, which makes it the first test of whether Honda can sell a car built around Indian buyers rather than adapted for them.

For the segment, it is one more mid-size electric SUV in a class that already has strong Indian and Korean options. Honda's case will rest on its badge for reliability and resale, and on whether a Tapukara-built car can be priced against cars that have had a year or more to settle in.

Should you wait for the Honda 0 Alpha?

Only if Honda ownership is the reason you are buying. With no price, no range and a launch window that runs to the end of March 2027, waiting means at least five months with no guarantee of the numbers. Put the cars on sale through our comparison tool first, and if your budget sits under ₹20 lakh, our EVs under ₹20 lakh page lists everything that already has an ARAI figure.

    The ThatsmyEV Take

We think Honda has been unusually disciplined about what it says on the 0 Alpha: a window, a plant and an export plan, and no numbers it might have to walk back. That is better than a teaser campaign, but it leaves buyers with nothing to compare.

What decides the 0 Alpha is price, and Honda's localisation will determine it. A car built at Tapukara with export volume behind it can be priced aggressively; one that leans on imported cells and electronics will struggle against rivals with local battery packs. Honda has not said where its cells come from.

For a buyer on 8 October 2026: do not hold a purchase for the 0 Alpha unless you would only ever buy a Honda. If you can wait until early 2027 anyway, wait and compare it, because a fourth strong mid-size EV will push prices in your favour. ThatsMyEV will publish the full comparison when Honda publishes the numbers.
