Freelander Concept 97 Unveiled: JLR x Chery EV With Huawei & 360 kW Charging
JLR and Chinese automaker Chery have just unveiled the Freelander Concept 97 at a debut event in China. It's a concept, so production is not confirmed yet. But what's been revealed is interesting enough that it deserves a proper look.
The Freelander is a name that carries a lot of weight for SUV enthusiasts. For many Indian buyers who grew up in the 2000s, it was the aspirational Land Rover — the one that felt attainable without feeling like a compromise. And then it disappeared.
Well, it's back. Sort of.
What Is the Freelander Concept 97?
The Concept 97 is the result of a joint venture between JLR, Jaguar Land Rover's parent group and Chery, one of China's largest and most technically capable automakers. The partnership is specifically aimed at the Chinese market, where JLR has been working to rebuild its presence after a difficult few years.
The "97" in the name is almost certainly a nod to 1997, the year the original Freelander was introduced. It's a deliberate callback, and the design makes that very clear.
The Design: Boxy Is Back
Look at the images, and the first thing that hits you is how unashamedly square this thing is. Flat panels, hard edges, a blunt front fascia, it looks more like a modern reinterpretation of a Defender than anything the Freelander badge has worn before.
That's not a criticism. The global auto market has been trending hard toward retro-rugged design, Defender, Jimny, Bronco, Ineos Grenadier, and the Concept 97 fits squarely into that aesthetic. Whether you find it fresh or derivative will depend on your taste, but it's certainly a strong visual identity.
Two colour combinations have been shown. A blue and silver split, and a teal variant, both of which lean into the outdoorsy, adventure-vehicle positioning that the Freelander brand was always built around.
The Tech Stack: This Is Where It Gets Interesting
The design is eye-catching but the technology choices are what make this concept genuinely significant. JLR and Chery haven't just slapped a battery into a retro body. They've built something with a serious modern tech foundation.
Huawei Qiankun Driver Intelligence System
The Concept 97 is the first Freelander model to feature Huawei's Qiankun intelligent driving system. This is a big deal. Huawei Qiankun is one of the most advanced driver assistance and vehicle intelligence platforms available in China right now, used in vehicles like the Aito M9 and Luxeed S7. Getting it into the Freelander nameplate signals that JLR is serious about competing with Chinese-native EV brands on their home turf, not just on brand heritage.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 Automotive Processor
The infotainment and cockpit experience runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 chip. The same class of automotive-grade processor is increasingly found in premium EVs globally. This ensures the in-car software experience is fast, responsive, and future-ready in a way that many legacy European brands have struggled to deliver.
i-ATS Intelligent All-Terrain System
Given the Freelander's heritage, it would have been embarrassing to launch a concept without credible off-road credentials. The i-ATS (Intelligent All-Terrain System) addresses that. Details on exactly how many terrain modes or what surfaces it covers are not yet public, but the presence of a dedicated intelligent terrain management system tells you this isn't being positioned as a city-only EV.
6C Supercharging at 360 kW
This is the spec that stops you mid-scroll. The battery is rated for 6C supercharging, delivering up to 360 kW of charging power. To put that in context, most premium EVs available in India today top out at 150–200 kW DC fast charging. 360 kW means you're looking at a vehicle that could go from near-empty to substantial range in under 15 minutes under the right conditions. This level of charging capability is currently more common in Chinese-market EVs than anywhere else in the world, and its inclusion here reflects the influence of Chery's battery and charging expertise on the platform.
What Does This Mean for India?
Directly? Nothing yet. The Freelander Concept 97 is a China-first product, developed by a China-specific JLR-Chery joint venture. There has been no announcement of a production version, let alone any plans to bring it to India.
But indirectly, this matters.
JLR has been working to modernise its entire lineup and shift toward electrification. The fact that the Freelander nameplate is being revived — and revived with this level of tech ambition — suggests it has a future in the JLR portfolio beyond just China. If a production version comes, and if JLR continues its India push, the Freelander could eventually return to Indian roads as an EV.
That's speculative for now. But worth keeping an eye on.
There's also a broader signal here: European brands partnering with Chinese manufacturers to access battery tech, fast charging infrastructure, and software capability is becoming a pattern. JLR-Chery, BMW-Brilliance, Volkswagen's deep China investments. The automotive world's technology centre of gravity has shifted, and legacy brands are adapting.
Quick Summary of Freelander Concept 97 Key Specs
Joint Venture: JLR x Chery Market: China (for now) Driver Intelligence: Huawei Qiankun System Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 Automotive Terrain System: i-ATS Intelligent All-Terrain System Charging: 6C supercharging, 360 kW Design Direction: Retro-rugged boxy SUV Production Status: Concept — not confirmed for production
Final Take
The Freelander Concept 97 is one of those reveals that's easy to dismiss as a China-market concept that may never see the light of a production line. And that might be exactly what happens.
But the tech inside it, Huawei intelligence, Snapdragon processing, 360 kW charging is not concept-grade fluff. These are real, production-ready technologies being deployed in vehicles on Chinese roads today. JLR choosing to package them under the Freelander name, with a design this committed to a clear visual identity, suggests there's genuine intent behind this unveil.
The Freelander came back once before, briefly, and then went quiet again. Whether this second coming sticks will depend on what JLR decides to do with this platform beyond China.
We'll be watching.
